Admission into the undergraduate majors in Architecture and Interior Design is selective due to the limit in enrollment imposed by the size of studio facilities and the Department’s emphasis on low student/faculty ratios in the studio courses at the core of the curriculum. About 60-65 students are admitted to the first-year studio each year (45 in Architecture and 15-20 in Interior Design). The undergraduate program has a total enrollment of about 250.
The admissions requirements for students applying to both programs include the minimum academic requirements established by Miami University. Additionally, a portfolio demonstrating creative aptitude is submitted directly to the department. Admitted students are typically in the top 10% of their graduating class and have composite ACT scores above 26 and combined SAT scores of 1100 or higher. There is also a special admission category for a limited number of students on the basis of extraordinary talent. Evidence of creativity in academic courses and independent, self-initiated study, as well as indication of interest in the professions of architecture and interior design, are highly desirable and expected. Students admitted to Miami but not to the major in Architecture or Interior Design may choose to attend Miami and pursue transfer into the major at a later date.
High school applicants to the programs in Architecture or Interior Design must satisfy both university admission requirements and the department’s requirement for submission of a creative Portfolio. Students wishing to transfer into the department from other majors at Miami or from off-campus should reference Transfer Requirements and requirements for submission of the Portfolio. Applicants are encouraged to contact the department with any questions and are also encouraged to schedule an informational Campus Visit.
