Do I need a portfolio?
Yes. The portfolio is required for all entering students. Link to Portfolio Requirements.
What if I don’t have a design background, or courses in Art? Should I bother to apply?
At the undergraduate level, the majority of portfolios are comprised of work from art classes. Yet the portfolio is defined broadly to include a number of things. Some of these can be created quickly, such as black and white “compositional” photographs, or quick sketches. Reviewers are looking for examples of your ability to think creatively, to problem solve, and to think visually. Creation of the portfolio is this exact sort of exercise. Be careful not to base the portfolio entirely on examples that are too technical or skill based. High school architecture or interior design projects can sometimes fall into this category; they fail to demonstrate your ability to think creatively or to problem solve. Finally, remember that the portfolio is one more tool that enables the department to get a better sense of your overall ability. High grades, test scores, and class rank are equally important.
What is the deadline for portfolio submission?
The portfolio is due at the same deadline as your other application materials. For Early Decision, November 1. For February notification, December 1. For March notification, January 31.
Do I need to schedule an interview with the department?
While this is not a requirement, especially given that the department attracts a national and international audience, it is recommended. By meeting with departmental faculty and touring our facilities, you’ll get a better sense of the unique features of our programs and an opportunity to learn more about the design professions, the application process, and our requirement for portfolio.

Is it important to have work experience before entering the Masters of Architecture Program?
Work experience may benefit the prospective M. Arch. student. It can provide information to help one decide which areas of study are most appealing, strengthen one’s admission credentials, and furnish a background, which will make graduate study more meaningful. On the other hand, for some individuals there are advantages to entering graduate school immediately after college. Graduating seniors are often more mobile and have fewer financial and family responsibilities that could make it difficult for individuals to leave their jobs to return to school.
