+ John Reynolds was the recipient of the 2006 Crossan Curry Distinguished Educator Award from the School of Fine Arts. This award recognizes best practices in school-based community outreach programs. Under John’s supervision, and in collaboration with Assistant Professor Kimberly Hill, graduate students in the spring 2004 ARC 583 graduate studio had their furnishing proposal for the interior environment of the Servants Sitting Room at Fallingwater accepted for construction by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
+ Assistant Professor Gulen Cevik and Visiting Professor Afsaneh Ardehali participated in Miami’s Silk Road trip through eastern Europe and Asia this summer, sponsored by the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies. Cevik, a native of Istanbul, also directed a summer workshop for architecture and interior design students exploring traditional and contemporary design throughout Turkey.
+ Gerardo Brown Manrique published “Frankel in Romania,” and “Frankel in Ohio,” in Gerwin Zohler (editor): Rudolf Frankel, die Gartenstadt Atlantic und Berlin (Verlag Niggli, 2006). An associated exhibition, “Gartenstadt Atlantic,” is forthcoming, to be held at the Werkbund Galerie, Berlin-Charlottenburg, September 14 – October 19.
+ Assistant Professor Ben Jacks and English Professor Annie Finch curated the exhibit Walking, Poems & Buldings, at Poets House in New York City and published, "A Discussion about ‘Walking, Poems, and Buildings': An Exhibition of Collaborative Work / Annie Finch, Poet; Ben Jacks, Architect; and students" in Romantic Pedagogy Commons, part of the peer-reviewed, award-winning online site, Romantic Circles, by the University of Maryland. A forthcoming publication, “Walking the City: Manhattan Projects,” will appear in Places: a Forum of Environmental Design, published by the University of California, Berkeley and partner schools.
+ Gail DellaPiana, in conjunction with J Elliott, directed the annual design-build summer workshop in Ghana, Africa. This six-week offering has produced about 10 buildings in 12 years for the village of Abrafo Odumasi. During the workshop, professor Elliott was officially christened Chief Nana Kwami Bukurow II, but returns to Miami with the shorter nickname “Chief Nana.”
+ Professor John Weigand was appointed to the national Council for Interior Design Accreditation Board of Directors as the representative from education. His summer workshop Italian Design 2005, co-directed with Krishna Joshi (Art) provided students a unique opportunity to work directly with prominent Italian designers in a studio setting. Lead collaborator was Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, along with partner Martino Berghinz, Shane Schneck (BED, 1994) of Studio Lissoni, and Naseem Alizadeh of Studio Citterio.
+ Murali Paranandi published “Computing for Competing” in Architecture Week, July (http://www.architectureweek.com/2006/0719/next_week.html), and “Form Follows Software Concept: Boldly Going Where Computers Can’t” in Partnerships in Learning 12: FormZ Joint Studies Program (January 2006). Fall 2005 digital studio work won an Award of Distinction for animation at the 2005 ACADIA conference in Savannah, Georgia, and is currently on exhibit in the winner’s gallery online at http://www.formz.com/joint_study/JS2005/awards20042005.htmlWork from his studio was also exhibited in Florence, Italy at “Spot on Schools,” curated by Paola Giaconia.
