Graduate: Art Education
Attention applicants to Art Education:
The Department of Art is not accepting applications to the Art Education program at this time.
Program Requirements
The MA in Art Education allows the graduate student to significantly concentrate hours of study in the studio areas. The program requires:
- 30 hours of graduate level study for completion
- 12 hours are required in the area of Art Education
- 3 hours are required in Art History
- Up to 15 hours may be taken in studio art (3 hours are optional for a written thesis).
A final project is required. One particular extra dimension of graduate study in Art Education is the allowance for independent study projects by students who are simultaneously practicing teachers. Independent study projects are supervised by the Art Education faculty and are oriented toward the scholarly integration of theory and practice.
As a culminating experience for this program, an exhibition, professional speech, article, or oral examination (if you are writing a thesis) is required to be completed two weeks before the end of the term in which you plan to graduate. If you choose an exhibit, speech, or article, you must meet with each member of your graduate committee before you complete 24 hours of course work, and you must follow the guidelines, available from the graduate director. If you choose to write a thesis, an oral examination is required. You must inform the graduate coordinator of your decision to write a thesis before you complete 10 hours of course work so that a committee is selected and your thesis proposal is approved.
