The Vatican itself consists of two large separate
buildings along with groups of smaller buildings that are positioned
along the slope of a hill at the foot of St. Peter's Cathedral.
Two long galleries that divide the enclosed area into two separate court
spaces connect the buildings. The palace proper is located towards
the southern end of the galleries, where Raphael began his first work in
the Vatican.
