James Olcott has been writing music for trumpets for over 25 years and has an international reputation for his work as a composer, arranger, and publisher. His works have be extensively used at ITG conferences - the Festival of Trumpets Concert at the 2005 ITG Conference in Bankok, Thailand was titled in his honor - and around the globe.

The following three publications are, ironically, etude books, but contstitute his most significant contributions to the trumpet world. (Read reviews by clicking here).

THE CHARLIER COMPANION
Triplo Press, 2000

The CHARLIER COMPANION, essentially second trumpet parts to the 36 Études Transcendantes of Théo Charlier, is the first of the Triplo Press Companion Series, and evolved from many years of using etudes from the standard pedagogical literature with students and playing 'behind' them to help with conceptions of sound, style, pitch, tempo, and phrase. The etudes can be played and studied as stand-alone works, but are most effective when played as conceived: as duets to the 36 Études Transcendantes by Théo Charlier. Individuals may also perform and study these etudes along with the compact disc recording by David Baldwin of the Leduc publication, available through the International Trumpet Guild.

THE ARBAN COMPANION
Triplo Press, 2003

The ARBAN COMPANION is the second in the Companion Series, this time as independent etudes and as duet parts to the Fourteen Characteristic Studies of Jean Baptiste Arban. Trumpet players may also perform and study these etudes along with the compact disc recording by David Baldwin of the Leduc publication, available through the International Trumpet Guild. Available in printed form only.

THE SMALL COMPANION
Triplo Press, 2006

The SMALL COMPANION, the third in the Companion Series, ifoll the 27 Melodic and Rhytmical Excercises for Trumpet by J.L. Small, follows in the pattern of the previous two Companions. Although the Small book and its etudes are not quite as famous as Charlier and Arban, it is an excellend medium-difficult source for teaching style, rhythm, and phrase. J.L. Small, by the way, is thought to have been N. Bousquet, who wrote a study book for cornet remarkably similar in style to the Small work. Available in printed form only.
