ONE OF THE MAIN TOOLS for learning techniques of performing on a high level in the trumpet section at Miami University was the school's well-known and respected trumpet ensemble, formed in the spring of 1983 by JO.
Trumpets used in performance included piccolo trumpets in Bb and A, soprano trumpets in Eb, D, C, and Bb, and Bb flugelhorns. The ensemble also owns and uses a set of eight Bach Stradivarious herald trumpets (as in the graphic above). The ensemble had as its literature works from the late Renaissance to the present.
The groups continuously won accolades from players, teachers, and performers alike for its excitement, high level of musicianship, variety of material, and value as a learning experience.
Over its history, the group had a wide variety of experiences as a performing organization. The configuration of the ensemble during the ensemble's 2012-2013 season was actually two separate esnembles, one group featuring the entire trumpet studio, and The Lickitysplits, a trumpet quartet or quintet with four-part rhythm section devoted to jazz. Click here for a series of photo galleries about these ensembles.
A bit of history
Over the years, the Miami University Trumpet Ensemble performed in a number of important venues, including the International Brass Congress in Bloomington, Indiana, almost every meeting of the Ohio chapter of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG), and twice at conferences of the Ohio Association of Music Educators Convention, in 1987 being the first ensemble of its kind perform in that venue.
In 1990 the group performed at the international conference of the International Trumpet Guild in College Park, MD, and appeared again in 1995 at BRASSFEST, the joint International Trumpet Guild/Summit Brass international conference in Bloomington, Indiana. The group also performed from 2002 to 2007 at the annual Gabrieli Fesitval at Wittenburg University (Dayton, Ohio).
The ensemble performed on an Artists and Lectures Series Concert at Miami University-Middletown with Cincinnati's premier brass quintet, the Queen City Brass, giving a world premier of work for trumpet ensemble and brass quintet by Frank Proto, performed at the prestigious New York Brass Conference for Scholarships, performed with the Whitewater Opera Company of Richmond, Indiana in performances of Verdi's Aida, and was a regular performer for the 8th Congressional District Congressional Awards Ceremonies held at Miami University's Kuhmler Chapel in the '80's and 90's.
In addition to its regular concerts and church services during the 1997-98 season, the ensemble heralded in the inaugaration of Miami's new president and performed at the opening ceremonies of the Ohio state conference celebrating the 100th anniverary of the American Federation of Music Clubs.
The ensemble was featured in other special events, playing, for instance, a fanfare and the Star Spangled Bannerat the opening of the Cincinnati Reds Baseball season in 1991, heralding at national sports events held on the Miami-Oxford campus (most recently in 2012), and performing on several occasions with the Middletown (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra in such works as the Sinfonietta, by Leos Janacek and Anton Bruckner's Fifth Symphony, and with the Miami University Symphony Orchestra in performances of Resphigi's Pines of Rome. In the fall of 2011, the ensemble joined the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the Verdi Requiem.
