MU Opera to present Sour Angelica and Gianni Schicchi
Oxford — Miami University’s Department of Music will present two one-act operas, “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, November 19–21 in Hall Auditorium on the Oxford campus.
Stage director for the Miami production is Mihaela Bogdan, a visiting international scholar. Benjamin Smolder, associate professor of music, is music director and conductor for Suor Angelica and Ricardo Averbach, associate professor of music and the conductor of the MU Symphony Orchestra, is the music director and conductor for Gianni Schicchi. Mari Opatz-Muni is the director of Miami’s opera program.
Written by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, both operas made their world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. “Suor Angelica” (“Sister Angelica”) and “Gianni Schicchi” (pronounced “Johnny Skeekee”) are two of the three one-act operas featured in Puccini's “Il Trittico.” The stories depict divergent paths to heaven and hell, combining the tragic story of a nun in “Suor Angelica,” (sung in Italian with English supertitles), who must deal with a great personal tragedy, with the broad comedy, sung in English of a greedy family that is humiliated by the crafty Gianni Schicch.
Tickets, $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students, are available at the Miami University box office, (513) 529-3200 or online, www.tickets.muohio.edu.
