MU music student secures spot in NY music symposium
Oxford - Miami music student Charlie Poe has been selected as a conducting associate for an upcoming symposium with the Carnegie Hall Choral Institute and Young People's Chorus of New York City, it was announced last month.
Eight fellows and eight associates were selected from a national pool of applicants for an opportunity to work February 15–18, 2012 with the artistic director and founder of the Young People’s Chorus as part of the Transient Glory Symposium.
The event is produced and run by Transient Glory, created in 2001 by Francisco J. Núñez and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ to spotlight the children’s chorus as an instrument capable of making music of the highest quality.
The symposium, with its thrust on contemporary choral music, will enable each of the chosen conducting fellows and associates to work with the composer of a Transient Glory commissioned work and the Symposium faculty in the preparation of evening concerts. In addition, participants will have private conducting lessons, attend clinics on choral literature, programming and techniques, and explore all aspects of new music written for young voices as part of their experience over the three-day period. The culminating event on each day of the symposium will feature concerts at three venues around New York City, including Le Poisson Rouge and Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall.
Poe is a junior double majoring in music education and violin performance at Miami University. This year, he has served as student conductor of the Men's Glee Club, as well as a guest conductor on Miami's annual Global Rhythms program. He has also recently been appointed assistant conductor of the Great Miami Youth Symphony Orchestra. Upon graduation, Poe hopes to spend a few years teaching and eventually return to graduate school for conducting.
