Music at Miami Day brings record numbers
Oxford – Over 80 high school students and their parents and teachers, from as far away as Pennsylvania, Florida, and Tennessee, were on campus on Wednesday, October 21, for the Department of Music’s semi-annual Music at Miami Day.
The number of students attending was a record high, according to James Olcott, who has been tracked the numbers since the event's inception in 1998.
“The event was quite successful,” said assistant department chair Brenda Mitchell, noting the numbers of students attending and the general quality of the attendees.
The day’s schedule included visits to ensemble rehearsals, classes, meetings with applied music instructors, performances by undergraduate and graduate students, and special sessions addressing curriculum, music as a profession, and the music department itself.
"Music at Miami Day is very important for us," said department chair Richard Green. "The department has become very strong, and getting the word out to prospective students and their teachers is an item of real priority. An event like today is an excellent step in that direction."
The event was organized by Green and administrative assistant Barbara Wright.
