Drop-Inn Center Entry Redesign

Pat Clifford, the director of the Drop-Inn Center, the largest shelter for homeless in the region, asked Miami Center for Community Engagment in Over-the-Rhine to develop concepts for improvements to their facility at 12th and Elm Streets.

Preliminary design work had been done on a pro-bono basis by Miami alumni Brandon Guyer, who passed his findings to the studio for analysis and further schematic design. Students proposed that the entrance to the Drop-Inn Center be reclocated to the southeast corner of the site, making the foyer more prominent on Elm Street and closer to off-street parking. The foyer included a new elevator for access to the recovery program areas on the upper floor and a proposed health clinic in the basement. Students also suggested a redevelopment of the Drop-Inn's parking area to the south, adding landscape features, a recreational courtyard for residents, and an area for the mobile health clinic to park its RV.

Students compiled their design concepts into a booklet that was presented to the Drop-Inn Center and used to generate interest in the community amongst donors. The project is currently in design development at a Cincinnati architecture firm.
