Ragamala Music and Dance Theater was founded in the Twin Cities in 1992 by Ranee Ramaswamy. Today, she and her daughter, Arpana, both direct, choreograph and perform for the company, which is dedicated to preserving the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam (for ease in reading, we write “Bharata Natyam” in the Student Guide). Ragamala's vibrant classical work and pioneering cross-cultural collaborations demonstrate the versatility, depth, and contemporary vitality of Bharatanatyam. The company has received many grants and awards, both for its excellence in dancing and for its strong commitment to the community through outreach programs at schools, colleges, senior citizen and cultural and community centers. Visit them at www.ragamala.net. The company has produced a video and study guide, Poetry in Motion, to introduce teachers and students to dance and other art forms of India.
