Miami senior Lawton Lovely received an Honorable Mention in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival's Region 3 Theatrical Design Excellence Awards in Sound Design given out at the KCACTF Region 3 Festival Saturday, January 9, 2012 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

There were 19 students entered in this category from across the region, which includes schools in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and parts of Ohio. Only two awards were given in this category – the regional award recipient and the honorable mention. Lawton received the honorable mention for his sound design of the MU Theatre production Independence last season. The respondents (a team of 6 professional designers from across the country) were very taken by the effectiveness of Lawton’s original musical composition, and how well the composition enhanced the emotional arc of the characters and the play.
