Design, Stage Management, Tech Direction

For design and tech positions, a call for applications goes out each spring for the following season. Positions are availabe in these areas:

Scene Design

The scene designer creates the visual environment for the play. Process includes conceptual meetings with director and production team; analysis and research; drawing, model building, drafting all scenery for the production; providing paint elevations or color model. Must have completed THE 202 (Stagecraft), THE 451 (Scene Design); served as assistant scene designer. Successful completion of THE 252, experience in props and painting is helpful, though not required.


Costume Design

The costume designer fashions the costumes for the play. Process includes conceptual meetings with director and production team; analysis and research; drawing, rendering and swatching costumes for the production. Must have completed THE 453 (Costume Design); served as assistant costume designer. Successful completion of THE 253, experience in makeup is helpful, though not required.


Lighting Design

The lighting designer illuminates the stage and establishes what the audience sees. Process includes conceptual meetings with director and production team; analysis and research; developing the light plot and accompanying paperwork; supervises focus; establishes cues. Must have completed THE 454 (Lighting Design); served as assistant lighting designer.


Sound Design

The sound designer creates the aural environment for the play. Process includes conceptual meetings with director and production team; analysis and research; recording and/or editing sound effects; reinforcement. Must have completed THE 101, experience in recording or editing of sound helpful.


Stage Management

The stage manager is the switchboard for all communication in the production process. The stage manager runs all production meetings; takes and distributes minutes; attends all rehearsals; serves as liaison between rehearsal and production areas; runs technical rehearsals; calls all performances. Must have completed or be enrolled in THE 342 (Stage Management – usually offered fall semester); served as ASM.


Technical Direction

The technical director takes the scene design and determines how scenery will be built. Duties include engineering construction of scenic units; costing and ordering of materials; construction of scenery. Must have completed THE 202 (Stagecraft), THE 252 (Technical Production); served as assistant TD.


Assistant Stage Managers

We use one ASM in Studio 88 and two in Gates-Abegglen. Duties include assisting the stage manager during the rehearsal and production process. Attendance at rehearsals (as needed), all performances. May also enroll in THE 342 (Stage Management).


Assistant Designers (Scenery, Costume, Lighting)

Assist the designers in all phases of production (research, conceptualization, realization) as needed by the designer. Interest in area; enrollment in or completion of THE 251 helpful, though not required.


Assistant Technical Directors

Assist technical director in realizing the scenic design. May include drafting and construction in shop. Interest in area; completion of or enrollment in THE 202 (Stagecraft).
